Database Application Engineer (Python, Azure)

Design, extend, and operate secure, Azure-based application and database components. The role is hands-on, solution-focused in a start-up environment. The role is responsible for robust database and infrastructure foundations that supports data ingestion and downstream transformations, developing application logic and APIs primarily in Python. Business-level data transformations are designed separately.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Python-based services and APIs supporting the platform.

  • Design and operate secure database-backed application components, with defined data residency and access controls.

  • Build database infrastructure to support data ingestion and downstream transformation, including staging schemas, log and control tables, duplicate handling, and auditability of data flows.

  • Work within Azure to manage application integration, identity, and permissions across development and production environments.

  • Apply secure coding practices and web security principles.

  • Document system design and key operational decisions where needed.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A degree in Computer Science.

  • Experience engineering data platforms on relational databases (e.g. SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Azure SQL), extending beyond front-facing tables to include ingestion layers, logging, and auditability of data flows.

  • Strong experience with Python, including building and maintaining application logic and APIs.

  • Experience working with Azure cloud services, including identity and access management concepts.

  • Awareness of web and application security considerations (authentication, authorization, secure data handling).

  • Familiar with Protection of Personal Data Requirements

Relevant Exposure

  • Experience handling large or messy datasets.

  • Basic familiarity with Git.

  • Experience with frontend technologies (HTML/CSS/JavaScript).

  • Exposure to insurance or other regulated data domains.
